FIRST IN MT: DELBENE PRIVACY BILL GETS MAJOR ENDORSEMENT — The New Democrat Coalition today is endorsing DelBene’s (D-Wash.) online privacy bill, The Information Transparency and Personal Data Control Act, H.R. 2013 (116), lending the measure the support of House Democrats' largest caucus. "This bill will bring transparency to consumer data and help consumers protect and control sensitive personal information,” Rep. Derek Kilmer (D-Wash.), who heads the centrist coalition boasting more than 100 House members, told MT in a statement. DelBene said the announcement “creates momentum in Congress to finally protect consumer privacy.”

— The details: The bill, reintroduced in March, would require companies to get opt-in consent before using consumers’ sensitive private information and to inform users of who their private and behavioral data is being shared with. It would also expand the Federal Trade Commission’s targeted rulemaking authority and give the agency the ability to fine first-time offenders for privacy mishaps, a power it currently lacks. Before the recess, the bill had 24 co-sponsors — but no GOP backers.
