New Dem Leadership Applauds Passage of War Powers Resolution, Condemns GOP for Continuing to Back Iran War
Today, New Democrat Coalition Leadership released a statement after the House of Representatives voted to advance a war powers resolution. While House Democrats were joined by a handful of Republicans in voting to rein in the Administration, 204 House Republicans voted against ending the war.
“Tomorrow marks 200 days of a war with Iran that President Trump claimed would only last four to six weeks. The American people have had enough. New Dems were proud to serve as their voice and vote unanimously to rein in an out-of-control White House and bring this war to a responsible end.
“Over the past seven months, American families have endured increased costs for food and fuel because of Trump’s misguided war. Eighteen servicemembers have been killed, and more than 800 wounded. The price of gas has soared beyond $4.25, while diesel is now at a record high $6.20. Yet this Administration's failed strategy has brought us no closer to regional stability or lasting peace in the Middle East.
“Instead, the Administration’s posture toward Iran has weakened our national security and let key strategic points in the region fall to Iran’s terrorist proxies. Simply put – the U.S. is in a less secure position today than we were before this war began.
“Even given the failures of Trump’s war, and despite the Trump Administration’s lack of answers, accountability, or coherent strategy, the overwhelming majority of our Republican colleagues still voted to give the Administration a free pass while continuing to raise prices and recklessly put our men and women in uniform at risk. New Dems will continue working to responsibly end this war while focusing on driving down costs here at home and securing a path toward security and stability in the Middle East. The American people will remember who stood with them, and who stood aside.”
