Chair Schneider Applauds Supreme Court Ruling Upholding Birthright Citizenship
Today, New Democrat Coalition Chair Brad Schneider (IL-10) issued a statement on this morning’s Supreme Court ruling upholding birthright citizenship. The 6-3 ruling struck down President Trump’s un-American day one executive order limiting birthright citizenship to children with at least one parent with citizenship or permanent legal status.
“Despite the President’s brazen attempt to disregard and ultimately dismantle our Constitution, today’s ruling proves what we have known for 160 years: every child born in this country is, by right, an American citizen with all the rights and protections due every American citizen.
“I’m reminded of what the late John Lewis would regularly tell us, ‘We may have come here on different ships, but we are all in the same boat now.’ While Trump and Congressional Republicans are determined to attack our immigrant communities, divide us, and ignore the struggles of working Americans, New Dems know we can tackle our biggest challenges if we stay focused and stand together.
“All Americans have the same claim on the American dream and a shared vision of a more perfect union. Together, we will stay committed to ensuring the United States continues to be a place where people can work hard, get ahead, and give their children a better future.”
