House Passes New Democrat Coalition-Supported Bill To Strengthen Career And Technical Education

Yesterday, the House of Representatives passed the Senate Amendment to the Strengthening Career and Technical Education for the 21st Century Act, which reauthorizes and amends the Carl D. Perkins Career and Technical Education Act. This vital piece of bipartisan legislation strengthens and improves career and technical education (CTE).

The bill makes necessary federal investments in secondary and post-secondary career education, aims to improve alignment between educational organizations and employers, and encourages a focus on employability skills, work-based learning opportunities, and meaningful credentialing.

“As jobs and careers change, the United States continues to rely on an education and training system that was built in the 19th century and is designed for the 20th,” said New Democrat Coalition Chair Jim Himes (CT-04). “We must expand high-quality, flexible educational opportunities that offer transferable, widely applicable skills and credits. This bill will help Americans gain the knowledge and skills they need to earn a good life.”

Rep. Raja Krishnamoorthi’s (IL-08) bipartisan Strengthening Career and Technical Education for the 21st Century Act was included in the New Democrat Coalition report: Closing the Skills and Opportunity Gaps. This report is the first in the Coalition’s Economic Opportunity Agenda: A Future that Works. This bill, which passed the House and Senate, will now go to the President’s desk.
