House Republicans Block Crucial New Dem Amendments to Address Energy Affordability
Today, New Democrat Coalition Vice Chair for Policy Nikki Budzinski (IL-13) issued a statement after House Republicans blocked 11 amendments offered by New Dem Members to the Fiscal Year 2027 Energy & Water Development appropriations bill from being considered.
House Republicans’ Big Ugly Bill repealed several crucial energy tax credits that lowered energy production and delivery prices. The New Dem amendments would take on these inflationary Republican cuts and help Congress identify ways to lower household energy bills. The amendments would also look at the impact of data centers on household energy costs and how Congress can ensure families do not bear the cost of new developments in their communities.
The amendments were offered by Vice Chair for Policy Nikki Budzinski (IL-13), Freshman Leadership Representative Kristen McDonald Rivet (MI-08), and New Dem Reps. Suhas Subramanyam (VA-10), Eric Sorensen (IL-17), Josh Riley (NY-19), Nellie Pou (NJ-09), Derek Tran (CA-45), Adam Gray (CA-13) and André Carson (IN-07).
Vice Chair for Policy Nikki Budzinski issued the following statement on the New Dem amendments:
“Thanks to Republicans’ energy policies, working families are being crushed by skyrocketing electric bills. Instead of working with us to actually lower energy prices by investing in an all-of-the-above energy strategy, Republicans continue to force consumers to foot the bill.
“We all saw how House Republicans celebrated last year when they passed their Big Ugly Bill that not only ripped away health care from millions of Americans, but also eliminated crucial programs that help us produce energy right here at home and lower costs for consumers. Now, they refuse to even consider debating our amendments, even as families face higher and higher electric bills every month.
“New Dems know what Americans are facing, and our amendments would take serious steps towards lowering costs. We will continue pushing to advance real solutions that will help build our clean energy infrastructure, cut through red tape, and finally give families some much-needed relief.”
