Today, New Democrat Coalition Chair Brad Schneider (IL-10) joined Democratic Women's Caucus (DWC) Chair Teresa Leger Fernandez (NM-03), Congressional Hispanic Caucus (CHC) Chair Adriano Espaillat (NY-13), Congressional Black Caucus (CBC) Chair Yvette Clark (NY-09), Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus (CAPAC) Chair Grace Meng (NY-06), and Congressional Progressive Caucus (CPC) Chair Greg Casar (TX-35) alongside more than 50 Members of the House Democratic Caucus to call for the firing of Secretary Kristi Noem outside Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) headquarters in Washington, D.C.

In his remarks, Chair Schneider outlined the systemic abuse and constitutional violations of DHS under Noem and demanded her immediate removal from office. Schneider also called for comprehensive DHS reform, laying out the list of demands announced last week alongside CPC Chair Casar.

You can watch Chair Schneider’s full remarks here, and read them below:

I am proud to stand alongside my colleagues from across the House Democratic Caucus to defend the rights and freedoms of the American people, and the foundational principles that have defined our nation and determined our character.

We’re here today to deliver one, unified message: Kristi Noem has got to go.

This Administration, and DHS under Noem, is undermining our Constitution and tearing up the Bill of Rights — right in front of our eyes.

They are spreading fear and chaos across our country, with armed and masked federal agents occupying our cities. They are terrorizing our communities. Instead of targeting hardened criminals, they are arresting hardworking neighbors, coworkers and friends.

They are arresting journalists—trashing the 1st Amendment while trying to hide their injustices and criminal actions from exposure. They have targeted, mobbed, and gunned down American citizens in the streets.

Renée Nicole Good and Alex Jeffrey Pretti should be alive and with us today. Renee should have driven her children to school this morning. Alex should be back in the ICU tending to our veterans.

Their tragic deaths are the result of a system that has grown increasingly aggressive, unaccountable, violent, and chaotic.

Rather than making our communities safer, Secretary Noem and her minions are making us all less secure — in our homes, our schools, our houses of worship, our parks, and our public places.

Noem has not only facilitated the violence in our communities, she has encouraged it. She has defended it. And she has lied about it – slandering brave Americans to cover up for the crimes of this Administration.

Congress must not look away at this moment. We must stand up for the lives, rights, and safety of the American people. We must act not just to make a statement, but to effect real and substantial changes.

That’s why last week I, as chair of the New Democrat Coalition, and my colleague and friend Greg Casar, as chair of the CPC, jointly laid out key reforms needed in DHS operations: We need ICE and CBP out of Minneapolis. We need masks off…and body cameras on. We need to end warrantless arrests and stop the targeting of courts, schools, churches, and other sensitive locations. We need independent investigations into every DHS shooting. We need to stop deportations of U.S. citizens.

And, we need Kristi Noem out.

If Trump doesn’t have the strength or sense to do it himself, Congress must take it upon ourselves to begin impeachment proceedings immediately.

Conduct a formal impeachment inquiry, build the irrefutable case, and give the Senate no option but to convict on the evidence.

America is better than what we are seeing from this administration and we deserve better than Kristi Noem.
