New Dem Chair Statement on House Republican Failure to Address Critical Foreign and Domestic Issues Before End of the Year
Today, New Democrat Coalition (NDC) Chair Annie Kuster (NH-02) released a statement on the critical domestic and international priorities that House Republican Leadership failed to address before the end of 2023:
“Last week, Speaker Johnson and House Republican leadership sent lawmakers home for the year without addressing some of the most pressing issues facing our nation. Thanks to Republican extremists, Congress failed to pass funding for Ukraine and Israel, humanitarian aid for innocent civilians in Gaza, a deal to secure the border and streamline immigration, and a long-term government funding plan to prevent a shutdown.
“Unfortunately, we have come to expect this level of dysfunction from GOP leadership. Since Republicans took control of the House, Congress has careened from crisis to crisis, with far-right Members pushing partisan politics over progress for the American people.
“The impact of continued Republican chaos is clear: this has been the least productive Congressional session since the Great Depression, and we will enter 2024 with more questions than answers.
“Despite the dysfunction, New Dems will never stop working for the American people. In the New Year, New Dems will continue reaching out to responsible lawmakers willing to find common ground on a full-year government funding deal and legislation that increases both national and domestic security, while also providing critical aid to our allies who are fighting for their freedom and democracy.
“On top of that, we must pass a bipartisan Farm Bill, address the climate crisis through permitting reform, tackle our trade and tax priorities, combat the overdose epidemic, continue our work to lower the cost of living for Americans, and so much more.
“As we approach 2024, we believe more than ever that the only way to deliver for hardworking families is through bipartisanship, with New Dems at the table.”
