New Dem Leadership Applauds House Passage of Vital Housing Act

Today, New Democrat Coalition Leadership issued a statement after the House of Representatives voted to pass the 21st Century ROAD to Housing Act. New Dems took a coalition-wide stance in support of the bill yesterday.

Today’s vote is a crucial step towards addressing the nation’s housing crisis and making the American Dream of owning a home a reality for millions of working families.

This legislation delivers on key objectives laid out in the New Democrat Coalition’s Housing Affordability Agenda, such as building more homes and getting them on the market faster, making it easier for families to buy or rent a home, and increasing transparency with housing data so resources can be placed where they are needed.

“Working families are struggling to keep roofs over their heads as the cost of housing and rent skyrocket. They want solutions from Congress, not the same old finger-pointing and politics that have let this crisis of costs spiral out of control. The legislation we passed today will put us back on track to build the millions of homes we desperately need to lower costs and make sure all of our neighbors can find an affordable place to live.

“Last year, New Dems released our Housing Affordability Agenda, which laid out bold recommendations for quickly building more homes and surging resources where they are needed. We are proud to see that this package reflects many of these priorities, including 19 bills led by New Dem Members.

“The Senate must now immediately pass this legislation so we can finally start delivering affordable housing for working families.”

New Dems has engaged with the House Financial Services Committee, our partners in the Senate, and outside stakeholders to ensure our Members’ priorities are reflected in housing legislation. This bipartisan agreement reflects provisions of numerous New Dem-sponsored or co-led bills, including:
