New Dem Leadership Condemns House Republicans for Needlessly Extending the Chaos of the DHS Shutdown

Tonight, New Dem Leadership issued a statement after House Republicans blocked bipartisan, common sense legislation to end the shutdown, instead stubbornly advancing a partisan 60-day DHS Continuing Resolution that has no path to passage in the Senate.

“Tonight, House Republicans once again showed their true colors and their devotion to causing chaos and inflicting pain on the American people. The continuation of the DHS shutdown, and the damage it is causing, lies squarely on the shoulders of Speaker Johnson and his House Republicans.

“A deal was done, unanimously passed by a bipartisan vote in the Senate. The House could have easily done the same if not for the intransigence of Speaker Johnson and his minions. Congress could have finally paid our hardworking TSA agents, ended costly air travel delays, and funded critical agencies like FEMA, CISA, and the Coast Guard. Instead, House Republicans still refuse to engage in bipartisan negotiations to rein in out-of-control ICE and CBP operations, or advance reforms that hold them to the same standards we expect from local law enforcement across the country.

“House Republicans are skipping town after singlehandedly extending a shutdown that is devastating hardworking federal employees and ruining travel plans for millions of Americans – all to fight for yet another blank check for Trump’s mass deportation agenda.

“We can’t imagine a more unproductive, unpopular, or politically unsound decision. Every House Republican should join Democrats and force a vote to end this harmful shutdown once and for all.”
