New Dem Leadership: Time to Act

Leaders support Senate bill to end gridlock and pay our nation's bills

Today, leaders of the New Democrat Coalition, led by Congressman Joseph Crowley (NY-7), released the following statement in support of H.R. 2693, the Bipartisan Budget Control Act, to increase the U.S. debt ceiling and provide the basis for a comprehensive deficit reduction solution:

"As New Democrats, we believe that our nation's fiscal health is critical to strengthening our ability to innovate, grow and compete in the global economy. At this critical juncture, in the midst of a fragile economic recovery, the time for partisanship and political posturing is over. We must address our nation's debt and get on a path toward long-term deficit reduction.

"The Reid compromise reflects months of bipartisan negotiations. It is not a perfect plan, but it will bring certainty to the financial markets, ensure we meet our obligations to our nation's veterans and seniors and maintain the full faith and credit of the United States government into 2013. This legislation also makes difficult choices to put us on a path to comprehensive, long-term deficit reduction. Most importantly, this bill puts the health and well-being of our country before the health and well-being of any party's political standing.

"For over 230 years, the United States has held the reputation as a nation that pays its debt. Today our reputation, standing in the world and competitiveness in the global marketplace are at risk. The time to act is now. We urge our colleagues, Democrats and Republicans alike, to join us in supporting H.R. 2693 and commit to paying our debts to maintain our economic leadership in the world."

Statement supported by New Democrat Coalition Chair Representative Joseph Crowley (NY-07), and Vice-Chairs Representative Jim Himes (CT-4), Representative Ron Kind (WI-3), Representative Rick Larsen (WA-2), and Representative Allyson Schwartz (PA-13).
