New Dem Ways & Means Members Slam Republicans for Advancing Bill that Cuts Health Care & Food Programs to Pay for a Megabillionaire Tax Cut
Today, New Democrat Coalition Ways & Means Members, including New Dem Chair Brad Schneider (IL-11) and Reps. Don Beyer (VA-08), Terri Sewell (AL-07), Jimmy Panetta (CA-19) and Stacey Plaskett (VI-AL), issued a statement following the marathon Ways & Means committee markup and eventual passage of the House Republicans’ reconciliation bill:
“For more than 17 hours and through the dark of night, Democrats on the Ways & Means Committee exposed the Republican reconciliation package for what it really is: a tax cut for the wealthiest billionaires in the country, financed by gutting the healthcare and benefits of millions of working people, families, seniors, and Veterans.
“We offered amendment after amendment to rehabilitate this harmful legislation. Amendments that would have sustained affordable health care coverage for 21 million Americans, blocked trillions of dollars in unearned tax breaks for billionaires, expanded tax credits for families with children, and provided relief for hardworking Americans devastated by the President’s chaotic trade war.
“Time and again we offered our House Republican colleagues the opportunity to join us in fixing this monstrosity of a bill. Yet at every turn, they unanimously blocked our attempts to right their wrongs, abandoning common sense and siding with Trump and the billionaire donor class.
“While Republicans ultimately forced this package through the committee, our fight is not over. We will continue to expose their ‘big beautiful bill’ for the big lie it really is and do everything in our power to protect the lives and livelihoods of the people we serve.”
