The New Democrat Coalition announced that Rep. Derek Kilmer (D-WA) will serve as a Co-Chair of the Coalition’s National Security Task Force. Kilmer, a freshman member of the House Armed Services Committee, represents a Washington state district that is home to Naval Base Kitsap, the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard and Intermediate Maintenance Facility, and borders Joint Base Lewis-McChord. Rep. Kilmer joins Reps. Ron Barber (D-AZ) and Colleen Hanabusa (D-HI), who currently serve as leaders of the Coalition’s National Security Task Force.

“As the world’s strongest, most successful nation, America needs leaders who will work tirelessly to ensure that our values of economic opportunity, human rights and freedom are protected from threats around the globe – Derek Kilmer is just such a leader,” New Democrat Coalition Chairman Rep. Ron Kind (D-WI) said in a statement. “I look forward to working with Derek to develop smart, tough and evidence-based solutions to the evolving national security challenges we face in an ever-changing world.”

“I’m honored to have the opportunity to work on behalf of our national security, our troops, our veterans and their families as Co-Chair of the New Democrat Coalition’s National Security Task Force,” Rep. Kilmer said in a statement. “Through this role I’ll continue fighting to ensure our nation has the best-trained, best-equipped and most capable fighting force in the world and that the United States takes a thoughtful approach to its national security challenges. I look forward to working with my New Dem colleagues and leaders on both sides of the aisle to ensure that we do.”
