New Democrat Coalition Celebrates House Passage of Respect for Marriage Act

Today, Members of the New Democrat Coalition (NDC) voted unanimously to pass H.R. 8404, the Respect for Marriage Act, to codify federal protection for marriages of same-sex and interracial couples.

This legislation is necessary to safeguard Americans’ fundamental freedoms following the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade and the concurring opinion issued by Justice Thomas that opened the door to overturning Loving, which guarantees the right to interracial marriage and Obergefell, which guarantees the right to same-sex marriage. The Respect for Marriage Act now heads to President Biden’s desk for his signature.

NDC Chair Suzan DelBene (WA-01) released the below statement after today’s vote:

“Every American deserves the freedom to marry who they love. That’s why New Dems were proud to help pass the Respect for Marriage Act today to give same-sex and interracial couples the dignity, stability, and certainty they deserve. Every American, no matter who they are or who they love, is entitled to equal protection under the law, and Democrats will continue working tirelessly to preserve every Americans’ fundamental freedoms.

“Earlier this year, we saw how quickly those freedoms can be stripped when the right-wing Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade. While extremist Republicans continue to threaten to reverse decades of progress, New Dems will continue fighting tooth and nail safeguard essential American rights. We look forward to seeing the President sign the Respect for Marriage Act this week.”
