New Democrat Coalition Celebrates Swearing-In of New Dem Congresswoman Jennifer McClellan

Jennifer McClellan will be the First Black Woman to Represent Virginia in Congress

This week, Rep. Jennifer McClellan (VA-04) was sworn into Congress and inducted as the New Democrat Coalition’s newest Member. New Democrat Coalition Chair Annie Kuster (NH-02) released the following statement on her induction:

“New Dems are thrilled to welcome Congresswoman Jennifer McClellan to our Coalition. Serving in the Virginia Legislature for nearly two decades, Jennifer has a strong track record of getting results for her constituents. From protecting reproductive freedoms and voting rights to expanding access to healthcare and leading the transition to a clean energy future, she knows how to get things done.

“Jennifer is also breaking barriers as the first Black woman elected to serve as a Member of Congress from Virginia.

“In Congress, Jennifer will carry on the legacy of our late friend and New Dem colleague Don McEachin, who honorably served the greater Richmond area for more than a quarter-century as a member of the Virginia House of Delegates, State Senator, and Congressman.

“New Dems look forward to working with Rep. McClellan to advance common-sense legislation that grows our economy, protects our Americans’ fundamental freedoms, lowers the cost of living, keeps our communities safe, and more.”

On joining the New Democrat Coalition, Rep. McClellan stated:

“I am excited to join the New Democrat Coalition, and I am ready to get to work delivering real results for Virginians and Americans across the nation,” said Rep. Jennifer McClellan (VA-04). “Like my predecessor, the late Congressman A. Donald McEachin, I am ready to get things done for Virginians. Throughout my eighteen sessions in the Virginia General Assembly, I worked to pass over 370 pieces of legislation. I plan on bringing that same determination to Washington. I look forward to working with New Dems to advance smart, forward-looking policies that create jobs, lower costs, and improve the lives of hardworking Virginian families.”

Rep. McClellan represents Virginia’s 4th Congressional District, which includes 15 cities and counties in the Commonwealth stretching from Richmond to the North Carolina state line. She serves on the Committee on Armed Services and the Committee on Science, Space and Technology.
