New Democrat Coalition Chair Jim Himes Statement on Trump's Skinny Budget
The New Democrat Coalition Chair Jim Himes (CT-04) released the following statement on President Trump’s Skinny Budget:
“While longer than 140 characters, President Trump's skinny budget is thin on details and lacks a vision for how to grow the economy across the country, create good paying jobs, promote opportunity for all, and keep America safe. This budget demonstrates once again that President Trump and his administration are not taking the tremendous responsibility of governing seriously. The proposal only addresses the 30 percent of the budget that is discretionary and does not even attempt to address the fiscal challenges ahead, which are predominantly on the mandatory spending and revenue side. The considerable cuts made to agencies such as the Department of State, National Institutes of Health, Education, Labor and others are short-sighted and will weaken our standing both at home and abroad. In addition, despite promises made on the campaign trail, this budget does not propose an infrastructure or tax reform plan. In fact, Trump’s budget cuts funding for the Department of Transportation by 13 percent.
“New Democrats believe any budget document should put our finances on a sustainable trajectory; invest in the future through science and medical research, education, infrastructure investment; support the creation of good paying jobs; and support America's soft and hard power around the globe.”
