New Democrat Coalition Chair Statement on House Passage of the Dream and Promise Act

Today, New Democrat Coalition Chair Derek Kilmer released the following statement following the House passage of H.R. 6, the Dream and Promise Act, which provides permanent status and a pathway to citizenship for Dreamers, Temporary Protected Status (TPS) holders, and Deferred Enforced Departure (DED) recipients.

“Dreamers and TPS holders are valuable, contributing members of our communities and the US economy. They are our neighbors, friends, and colleagues. They strengthen our communities as teachers, first responders, members of our military, and entrepreneurs.  For so many reasons, we must create a pathway to citizenship for Dreamers and create security and stability for long standing TPS and DED holders. Recent actions by the Administration have thrown their lives into limbo.  It’s past time that Congress acts to change this course for millions of people who have lived in the United States for years and who deserve real protections under the law and a path forward towards legal citizenship.”

The month of June is Immigrant Heritage Month, a month designed to celebrate the rich contribution and history of immigrants. According to Center for the Study of Immigrant Integration (CSII) at University of Southern California estimates, up to 2.5. million people would be eligible for protection under this bill. These individuals and their families contribute $75.4 Billion in spending power, and $27.1 billion in taxes each year.

Kilmer added:  “The diversity of our communities strengthens our nation and our economy. Immigrants are a valuable part of our economy and society.  Members of the New Democrat Coalition urge the Senate to take swift action on this bill.”
