New Democrat Coalition Lays Out New Economic Opportunity Agenda: A Future that Works

New Democrat Coalition announces policy priorities that will help make sure our workers are prepared for the jobs of the future

Today, the New Democrat Coalition announced the Economic Opportunity Agenda: A Future that Works, which lays out policy priorities that will help make sure our workers are prepared for the jobs of the future. The report announced today, Closing the Skills and Opportunity Gaps, is the first in a series focused on expanding opportunities in the changing economy.

Within the first paper are three principles for expanding opportunities in the changing economy:

  1. Give every American access to the tools to succeed in the 21st century economy
  2. Remove obstacles for Americans to access middle-skill jobs and close the opportunity gap
  3. Create a culture of lifelong learning and make it easier for workers to invest in their future

“As wage growth stagnates and traditional jobs change or disappear, prosperity seems to recede from an ever-growing number of American workers. We believe that the enactment of these policies and others like them is necessary to achieve broadly-shared economic prosperity and to rebuild the social and political stability eroded by kitchen table economic anxiety. Addressing the unique economic challenges of today and tomorrow must be the next progressive advance,” said New Democrat Coalition Chair Himes.

This Congress, the Coalition established the Future of Work Task Force, which is co-chaired by Reps. Bill Foster, Seth Moulton, and Jared Polis. Over the past year, the Task Force has convened forums on Capitol Hill to discuss the challenges that workers across America face today. This policy plan has resulted from the multiple forums and meetings with companies, labor unions, local organizations, and thought leaders over the last several months. New Democrat Coalition Members are focused on finding policy solutions to address the opportunities and challenges related to the evolving nature of work in the changing economy.
