New Democrat Coalition Leaders: America Deserves Better than Ryan ‘Budget to Nowhere’

The New Democrat Coalition’s leadership issued the following statement in response to the release of the Republican budget spearheaded by House Budget Committee Chairman Rep. Paul Ryan (R-WI):

“Instead of using a partisan document to whip up the far right, Congress should focus on building on the bipartisan cooperation we saw in the two-year budget deal, the omnibus appropriations, and the debt ceiling,” the statement read.  “Americans are tired of ‘Budgets to Nowhere’ that make drastic cuts to the priorities they care about most –education, innovation, job training, research and development, and infrastructure for America’s future. They don’t want to see us casting blame on each other; they want to see us investing in the pro-opportunity priorities of today that will create the jobs of tomorrow.

The best way for us to foster economic growth is to make the core investments in the parts of our budget that enable the United States to remain competitive in the 21st century global economy. We can deal with the challenges of our long-term debt and deficits if we enact comprehensive immigration reform, pass comprehensive tax reform, and equitably reform mandatory spending programs. Still, we can’t do these things at the expense of our economic future.

It’s time for real solutions, not partisan gimmicks. We’ve produced forward momentum by working together on last year’s budget agreement, finishing the FY14 appropriations, and removing the threat of government default – let’s make the most of it.”

The New Democrat Coalition is dedicated to maintaining America’s standing as the world’s strongest, most successful nation. Founded in 1997, the New Dems believe firmly in the power of American ingenuity and innovation, and are focused on finding ways to foster and harness this creativity to grow our economy, create new American jobs, and ensure a safer and more secure future for our country.
