New Democrat Coalition Leadership on Trump’s First Day in Office
“On his first day in office, Trump completely failed to address the number one issue for the American people - the economy.”
Today, New Democrat Coalition Leadership released the following statement on President Trump’s inauguration and first day in office:
“In the November election, the American people sounded the alarm about their first priority for Washington: we need to lower costs for hardworking American families. Yet, on his first day in office, President Trump completely failed to address the number one issue for the American people – the economy.
“Instead, President Trump announced nearly 100 Executive Orders focused on retribution, rolling back rights, and pushing unconstitutional actions, including attempting to strike down the 14th Amendment’s guarantee to birthright citizenship. Rather than focusing on Americans’ real concerns, President Trump is stoking the same old personal grievances and far-right culture wars that do nothing but divide our country.
“If today is representative of Trump’s plans for the next four years, then New Dems’ role in a narrowly divided Congress is more important than ever. While Trump seeks to circumvent Congress and subvert the will of the American people, New Dems will continue to reach across the aisle to lower costs, humanely secure our borders and tackle immigration reform, and ensure America remains an essential leader on the global stage.
“New Dem Members stand for economic growth and opportunity, healthy and safe communities, and strong national security and defense. New Dems will work with anyone to find common ground, and will stand up to anyone who seeks to undermine our Constitution, weaken our Democracy, or threaten our values.
“This moment should be a time for American unity. Donald Trump is now the President of all the American people, not just those who voted for him. New Dems will work tirelessly to remind him, and our colleagues in the House, of that fact.”
