New Democrat Coalition Priorities Included in Democratic Whip’s ‘Make it in America’ Plan

The New Democrat Coalition announced some of its key priorities were included in Democratic Whip Steny Hoyer’s (D-MD) ‘Make it in America’ plan. The Coalition applauded this success in the following statement from its leadership:

“We are pleased to see Whip Hoyer’s efforts to keep America a global leader by promoting exports, supporting STEM education and maintaining our position at the front of the line in the race to lead global technological innovation,” the statement read. “As pro-growth Democrats, we firmly believe that government can play a positive role in improving the lives of the American people and fostering broad-based prosperity if it focuses on the investments that grow our economy. We look forward to advancing the priorities outlined in the Make it in America agenda in the days and weeks ahead.”

The ‘Make it in America’ plan aims to help American businesses manufacture their products, innovate and create jobs here at home. 19 Coalition members had bills included in the plan. Among the core priorities of the plan are some key New Dem goals:

Promoting the Export of U.S. Goods

Manufacturers need access to markets, both domestic and international, in order to sell their products. That requires reliable physical and telecommunications infrastructure, strong trade enforcement, and targeted assistance for American exporters. The New Democrat Coalition’s leaders support the Whip’s call to renew the job-creating U.S. Export Import Bank, which helps American businesses sell products stamped ‘Made in America’ around the globe without costing taxpayers a dime.

Enhancing America’s Innovative Ecosystems

Investments in research and development have a proven track record of jumpstarting economic growth. Over half of all growth since World War II has been attributed to technological innovation, with diverse inventions from laser technologies to MRIs to the Internet itself having been developed in part through federally-funded research. The Whip’s call to bring innovation back to the U.S. is correct, which is why the New Dems will work for a common sense agenda to invest in R&D through the reauthorization of America COMPETES.

The New Democrat Coalition is dedicated to maintaining America’s standing as the world’s strongest, most successful nation. Founded in 1997, the New Dems believe firmly in the power of American ingenuity and innovation, and are focused on finding ways to foster and harness this creativity to grow our economy, create new American jobs, and ensure a safer and more secure future for our country.
