New Democrat Coalition to GOP: Work Across the Aisle on Bipartisan Tax Reform Plan

House Republicans released their one-sided, regressive tax proposal without bringing any Congressional Democrats to the negotiating table. In response, the New Democrat Coalition released the following statement:

“Our country is in dire need of a modern tax code that supports middle-class families, fosters business development, is globally competitive, encourages innovation and creates opportunities for Americans to prosper in a 21st century economy. The last time our tax code was successfully overhauled, it was in 1986 when a Republican president and a bipartisan group of lawmakers came together to help the American people and grow the economy by reforming outdated and unfair parts of the tax code. We should not forget the lessons of history now.

“The New Democrat Coalition continues to be willing and ready to work across the aisle to ensure our tax policies are fiscally responsible and forward-looking to help families and businesses alike in today’s changing economy. We should focus on bringing bipartisan ideas to the table and creating the best possible package to improve economic conditions for the middle class. But so far, it’s been a one-sided conversation behind closed doors. If Republicans want a successful deal that lasts, they’ll work with Democrats through regular order to ensure all American have representation in this process.”

This statement is supported by New Democrat Coalition Chair Rep. Jim Himes (CT-04) and New Democrat Coalition Tax-Reform Co-Chairs and New Democrats on Ways & Means Reps. Ron Kind (WI-03), Terri Sewell (AL-07), Suzan DelBene (WA-01), Don Beyer (VA-8), and Brad Schneider (IL-10).
