New Democrat Coalition Trade Task Force Applauds Record U.S. Exports in 2013
The leaders of the New Democrat Coalition’s Trade Task Force released the following statement following the Department of Commerce’s announcement that 2013 exports from the U.S. set a new record:
“We’re pleased with the Commerce Department’s announcement that, at $2.3 trillion, U.S. exports have set a record for the fourth straight year,” the statement read. “At a time when 95 percent of the world’s consumers live beyond our borders, it’s critical that we aggressively pursue opening markets to sell products and services stamped ‘Made in the USA’ around the globe. By exporting our goods, services and ideas, we can support and create the good paying jobs that are staples of middle-class lives and critical to our economy.”
According to a Department of Commerce release, the trade surplus in services exports reached a record $231.6 billion in 2013, an increase of 12 percent from 2012. The growth was led by all-time highs in the travel and tourism sectors.
Exports of goods increased as well, including record highs in automotive, industrial supplies, consumer goods, capital goods, and petroleum. Imports of goods fell for the first time since 2009.
