New Democrat Coalition Trade Task Force Statement on USMCA Progress
Today, New Democrat Coalition (NDC) Chair Derek Kilmer, Vice-Chair for Policy Suzan DelBene, and NDC Trade Task Force Co-Chairs Ron Kind, Rick Larsen, Gregory Meeks, and Lizzie Fletcher released the following statement on Speaker Pelosi’s announcement that House Democrats reached an agreement on USMCA with United States Trade Representative Ambassador Lighthizer:
“We are pleased to see that Speaker Pelosi and Ambassador Lighthizer have reached an agreement on modifying the United States Mexico Canada Agreement (USMCA), setting the stage for congressional consideration. The New Democrat Coalition supports modernizing NAFTA to reflect the 21st century economy.
“We have been supportive of the efforts of the Speaker’s NAFTA Working Group. We applaud the work of NDC Vice Chair Terri Sewell for ably representing the Coalition on the Working Group and negotiating improvements to the enforcement of the agreement that are critical for gaining our Members’ support. We look forward to reviewing the final USMCA and working with our colleagues on its path forward in the House.”
Since its founding, the Coalition has been integral to the congressional consideration of every major trade initiative. Earlier this year, NDC Members sent a letter to Ambassador Robert Lighthizer urging him to continue working with NDC and the Speaker’s Working Group to resolve outstanding issues that must be addressed for successful, bipartisan passage of the updated NAFTA. The Coalition also released NAFTA 2.0 priorities which were developed by the NDC Trade Task Force and approved by the full Coalition.
