New Democrats Applaud Creation of Export Promotion Cabinet
Today, leaders of the New Democrat Coalition, led by Congressman Joseph Crowley (NY-7) and the New Dem Trade Task Force Co-Chairs Congressman Adam Smith (WA-9) and Congressman Jim Moran (VA-8), released the following statement upon President Obama's Executive Order creating the Export Promotion Cabinet:
"Earlier this week, the New Democrats unveiled our priorities for a comprehensive trade agenda. We called for more action to target potential buyers of American goods and services abroad. We applaud President Obama for signing the Executive Order to create the Export Promotion Cabinet, which fulfills one of the New Dem's key priorities and, most importantly, will create new opportunities for American businesses abroad.
"Exports present an incredible opportunity for economic growth and job creation. In 2008 alone, American businesses exported $1.84 trillion in goods and services, supporting 10 million American jobs and representing 13% of our GDP. As this Congress and the Administration look for ways to grow our economy and put Americans back to work, increasing our exports will help American businesses grow, hire workers and bring our economy back on track.
"We applaud the appointment of W. James McNerney, Jr. and Ursula Burns to lead the Cabinet, both of whom will bring valuable experience and understanding of the global marketplace. We look forward to working with them to expand export opportunities for American goods and services.
"The establishment of the Export Promotion Cabinet is an important step towards creating a comprehensive trade agenda and we urge the Administration and this Congress to continue working on a balanced trade agenda that boosts small businesses, supports American workers, spurs innovation, strengthens our national security and protects American goods and services."
