New Democrats Applaud Passage of Trade Package

Today, leaders of the New Democrat Coalition, led by Chair Congressman Joseph Crowley (NY-7) and the New Dem Trade Task Force Co-Chairs Congressmen Adam Smith (WA-9) and Jim Moran (VA-8), released the following statement upon House passage of Trade Adjustment Assistance and the three pending bilateral trade agreements with Colombia, Panama and Korea:

“We applaud passage of the comprehensive trade package that includes the three pending bilateral trade agreements and the long-awaited reauthorization of Trade Adjustment Assistance.  As Asia and Latin America’s global influence continue to grow, enacting trade agreements with Korea, Panama and Colombia will strengthen partnerships in these strategic regions and reinforce our national security.

“Most importantly, the newly negotiated agreements by the Obama Administration include enforceable rules to ensure our partners live up to their promises of instituting and maintaining core protections for workers, reducing trade barriers, and opening markets to U.S. goods and services.

“Moving these agreements and Trade Adjustment Assistance forward is vital for growing our economy, boosting exports, and helping American workers and businesses – small and large – compete and succeed in the global economy.”
