New Democrats Statement on President Obama’s Deficit Reduction Plan

Today, leaders of the New Democrat Coalition, chaired by Congressman Joseph Crowley (NY-07), released the following statement on President Obama’s Deficit Reduction Plan:

“We share the President’s belief that deficit reduction must be a shared responsibility among all Americans.  Everything should be on the table, including meaningful tax reform, identifying wasteful defense spending, and finding ways to make our entitlement programs solvent.  Unfortunately, House Republicans came out of the gate with an irresponsible, unworkable proposal that would merely shift our nation’s financial difficulties to states, seniors and disadvantaged Americans.

“We need more than a conversation; we need a long term plan to reduce our debt in a responsible manner that works for American families, businesses and our economy.  The New Dems are committed to working with our colleagues and the Administration on a comprehensive strategy for reducing our nation’s deficit without damaging our growing economy.”

Statement supported by New Dem Leadership Members, led by Chair Representative Joseph Crowley (NY-07), and Vice-Chairs Representative Jim Himes (CT-4), Representative Ron Kind (WI-3), Representative Rick Larsen (WA-2), and Representative Allyson Schwartz (PA-13).
