New Dems Applaud House Passage of Bipartisan Budget Agreement to Avoid Economic Catastrophe
The Coalition was Critical in Delivering the Votes to Pass this Legislation and Now Call on Senate to Pass the Bill without Unnecessary Delay
Today, New Democrat Coalition Chair Annie Kuster (NH-02) released a statement following House passage of the bipartisan Fiscal Responsibility Act:
“There never has been and never will be anything ‘fiscally responsible’ about refusing to pay America’s bills.
“Tonight, New Dems led a bipartisan coalition of lawmakers in rejecting the antics of some extreme Republicans and followed through on our duty to protect the full faith and credit of the United States.
“Defaulting on our debt would have plunged the U.S. into an unprecedented economic crisis that would have wiped out more than 7 million jobs, $10 trillion in household wealth, and irreparably damaged the economic and political power of the U.S. dollar on the world stage.
“President Biden and White House negotiators delivered a deal that suspends the debt ceiling until 2025, safeguards critical programs millions of Americans rely on, including Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid, and preserves the legislative accomplishments championed by President Biden and New Dems last Congress–– from the CHIPS and Science Act and the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law to the PACT Act and Inflation Reduction Act.
“We urge the Senate to pass this legislation without unnecessary delay and send the bill to President Biden’s desk immediately for his signature.”
