New Dems Applaud Passage of Pay-As-You-Go Legislation
Today, the leadership of the New Democrat Coalition released the following statement in response to the passage of H.R.2920, The Statutory Pay-As-You-Go (PAYGO) Act of 2009, in the U.S. House of Representatives:
"Today, our members joined with our colleagues in the U.S. House of Representatives in support of statutory PAY-As-You-GO, a policy that was in effect under the Clinton Administration and put the federal budget back in the black. It is time for the Federal government to run like every American household, within a budget. New Democrats are committed to tackling critical reforms that will put our economy back on a path towards growth and provide a more stable and prosperous future for American families and businesses. As we look to accomplish these priorities, statutory PAYGO will ensure that Congress pays for the policies it implements, rather than creating debt or assuming future generations will pay for the things we don't.
"The New Democrat Coalition Leadership applauds the work of our members, President Obama, House Leadership, House Budget Chairman John Spratt, and the Blue Dog Coalition on their efforts to pass PAYGO legislation, which is a first of many important steps to reduce our nation's deficit.
"The passage of the legislation will ensure Congress remains committed to enacting sound policies that cut wasteful spending and reform inefficient systems to provide future stability for American families and businesses as well as our nation's economy."
