New Dems Call on Republicans to Advance Comprehensive Trade Package that Includes Trade Adjustment Assistance
Today, leaders of the New Democrat Coalition, led by Congressman Joseph Crowley (NY-7) and the New Dem Trade Task Force Co-Chairs Congressmen Adam Smith (WA-9) and Jim Moran (VA-8), released the statement below following today’s Ways and Means Committee “mock” mark-up of the three pending U.S. bilateral trade agreements – Korea, Panama and Colombia:
“The three pending trade agreements are important measures that will help increase our exports, build our economy and strengthen our national security. However, a critical component was left out of today’s agenda – reauthorization of the Trade Adjustment Assistance (TAA) program. Its inclusion in this trade package is critical to the continued success of American workers in the 21st century global economy.
“American workers and businesses can not afford to wait for Republicans to stop playing politics with these agreements. The New Democrats are dedicated to working with the Administration and our colleagues in Congress to move forward on a comprehensive trade package.”
Statement supported by New Democrat Trade Task Force Co-Chairs Representative Adam Smith (WA-09) and Representative Jim Moran (VA-8), and the New Dem Leadership Members, including Chair Representative Joseph Crowley (NY-07), and Vice-Chairs Representative Jim Himes (CT-4), Representative Ron Kind (WI-3), Representative Rick Larsen (WA-2), and Representative Allyson Schwartz (PA-13).
