New Dems: Congress Needs to Get to Work on Jobs

New Dem priorities included in President’s Jobs Plan: Trade, Infrastructure and Strengthening Small Businesses

Today, leaders of the New Democrat Coalition, led by Congressman Joseph Crowley (NY-7), released the following statement in response to President Obama’s address to Congress this evening on job creation:

“Every day that passes without action on jobs another American struggles to find work and another family cannot pay their mortgage or send their child to college.  The Republican leadership of the House needs to stop wasting time and focus our work on creating jobs.  Our competitiveness, the health of our economy and the prosperity of future generations are all on the line.

“Tonight, President Obama laid out a plan to create private sector jobs which included many policies that the New Democrats have long called for such as enacting the pending trade agreements, upgrading our nation’s infrastructure and supporting small business growth and innovation.  We echo the President’s call for modernizing and streamlining our tax code to foster growth and help American families and businesses succeed.

“The New Democrats are ready to roll up our sleeves to enact pro-growth policies that get Americans back to work rebuilding crumbling bridges and roads, turning big ideas into new products, and manufacturing goods to sell at home and in the global marketplace.”

The New Democrats have long called for many of the elements included in the President’s plan:

  • The New Dems have a record of advocating for advancing the three pending bilateral trade agreements with Colombia, Korea and Panama.  (click here to view the New Dem Trade agenda)
  • Under the leadership of the New Democrat Coalition Critical Infrastructure and Manufacturing Task Force, the New Dems have called for improving our nation’s infrastructure and supporting our manufacturers using creative solutions such as an infrastructure bank.  (click here to view the principles)
  • The New Dems called for reforming our nation’s tax code in the Innovation and Competitiveness Task Force Principles.  (click here to view the principles)

Statement supported by New Democrat Coalition Chair Representative Joseph Crowley (NY-07), and Vice-Chairs Representative Jim Himes (CT-4), Representative Ron Kind (WI-3), Representative Rick Larsen (WA-2), and Representative Allyson Schwartz (PA-13).
