New Dems: It’s Time to Act on Obama’s Trade Agenda to Strengthen Exports, American Economy
Today, leaders of the New Democrat Coalition, led by Congressman Joseph Crowley (NY-7) and the New Dem Trade Task Force Co-Chairs Congressmen Adam Smith (WA-9) and Jim Moran (VA-8), released the statement below upon President Obama’s submission of the pending bilateral trade agreements with Korea, Colombia and Panama to Congress:
“Trade agreements, when done right, can expand our exports, grow our economy and strengthen our national security. We welcome the agreements submitted by President Obama and encourage swift action so that Congress has a chance to vote on each agreement. We also welcome the long-overdue vote on renewing Trade Adjustment Assistance that will help ensure American workers have the necessary skills and training to succeed on the global stage.
“Korea, Panama and Colombia are all strong allies of the United States and enacting these agreements will advance and strengthen these strategic relationships. It will also ensure we have clear and strict rules in place to crack down on our new partners should they fail to live up to the promises of these agreements.
“The New Democrats are committed to working with the Administration to move these agreements forward to help America compete in the global marketplace and maintain our leadership in the world. We look forward to U.S. manufacturers and workers benefitting from having access to these vital markets.”
Statement supported by New Democrat Trade Task Force Co-Chairs Representative Adam Smith (WA-09) and Representative Jim Moran (VA-8), and the New Dem Leadership Members, including Chair Representative Joseph Crowley (NY-07), and Vice-Chairs Representative Jim Himes (CT-4), Representative Ron Kind (WI-3), Representative Rick Larsen (WA-2), and Representative Allyson Schwartz (PA-13).
