New Dems Leadership Statement on House Vote on Continuing Resolution, Unsustainable National Debt

Today, New Democrat Coalition Leadership issued the following statement after the House of Representatives voted to pass a Continuing Resolution to fund the government through early December. The resolution did not include any additional funding for ICE or CBP, in line with New Dems’ demands. This version of the Continuing Resolution was passed by the Senate in August and now awaits the President’s signature.

“Too many feel like the American Dream is slipping from their grasp with prices rising, job growth slowing, and millions continuing to suffer under President Trump’s and Congressional Republicans’ cost-of-living crisis. The last thing anyone wants or needs now is a government shutdown. That’s why Democrats just came together to keep the government open and ensure American families, and the communities they live in, can continue to receive support from programs they rely on.

“While New Dems were happy to help avert another disastrous Republican shutdown, it is clear that things need to change. We remain dedicated to responsibly funding our government and doing so without expensive extensions or gimmicks. In contrast, last year, Congressional Republicans passed the most fiscally irresponsible legislation in the history of the United States — adding nearly $5 trillion to the national debt over 10 years to give tax cuts to the wealthiest Americans. They gave ICE and CBP over $130 billion to carry out inhumane and deadly operations and have voted to bankroll the President’s costly Iran War.

“Adding insult to injury, the national debt recently surpassed $40 trillion! That means we now spend more on just the interest we owe on the national debt than we do on either our national defense or Medicare! Compounding the problem, our massive debt drives higher interest rates, making life even more expensive for families — whether it’s buying a first house, financing a car, or starting a small business. Republicans are literally putting our economy, our national security, and our children’s futures at risk.

“Time and again Republicans demonstrate that they are the party of higher debt and higher costs – not fiscal responsibility. New Dems are ready to deliver the relief families need and will continue to push for commonsense, pro-growth policies that get us on a better fiscal track.”

The New Democrat Coalition was founded in 1997, and championed fiscal reforms that took our country from regular deficits to a surplus. Every Republican president since has increased the deficit, while every Democrat has reduced it.
