WHAT THEY ARE SAYING: Trump & Congressional Republicans’ Big Ugly Bill Will Hurt American Families

Note from New Democrat Coalition Vice Chair for Communications Marc Veasey (TX-33):

“President Trump and Congressional Republicans' Big Ugly Bill is a bad deal for hardworking American families. Not only does this legislation hurt Americans now, ripping food away from hungry children and health care from hardworking families, but it also increases the deficit – burdening future generations all to give the wealthiest billionaires more tax breaks. There is still time to do the right thing – Republicans must join Democrats and kill this bill once and for all.”

AMERICANS STRONGLY OPPOSE THE BIG UGLY BILL

Republicans are jamming this bill because the more Americans learn about it, the more they hate it

  • Quinnipiac: 29% said they support the bill,  55% percent of voters said that they oppose it (6/26/25)
  • Fox News: 38% of registered voters support the “One Big Beautiful Bill” based on what they know about it, while 59% oppose it. (6/16/25)
  • KFF: 35% of adults have a favorable view when asked about the “One Big Beautiful Bill Act,” while 64% have an unfavorable view. (6/17/25)
  • Pew Research Center: 29% of adults favor the bill, while 49% oppose it. (6/8/25)
  • The Washington Post and Ipsos: 23% of adults support “the budget bill changing tax, spending and Medicaid policies,” while 42% oppose it. (6/10/25)
  •  NBC News Decision Desk poll: Asking Americans what issue matters most to them, 51% picked “maintaining current spending levels on programs like Medicaid,” 21% picked “continuing and expanding income tax cuts and credits” enacted by Trump in 2017, and 28% picked “ensuring that the national debt is reduced.” (6/15/25)
ORGANIZATIONS, UNIONS SLAM BIG UGLY BILL
  • American Clean Power: “The Senate reconciliation package is a step backward for American energy policy. The intentional effort to undermine the fastest-growing sources of electric power will lead to increased energy bills, decreased grid reliability, and the loss of hundreds of thousands of jobs.”
  • Children’s Hospital Association: “Cutting programs that support the health of our next generations does not reduce spending. It borrows from tomorrow and ensures that today’s kids will need more care down the road. That's an expensive bet, and it only kicks the costs to the next generation.”
  • Committee For a Responsible Budget (CRFB): The Senate reconciliation bill fails almost every test of fiscal responsibility. Instead of worrying about arbitrary deadlines or sparing the Senate another vote-a-rama, fiscal conservatives should stand up for what’s right and reject the Senate plan to explode our debt.
  • Evergreen Action: “Who is this bill actually for? Not automakers. Not utilities. Not coal miners. Not construction workers. Not hospitals or doctors. None of them want it, and the American people certainly don’t either. The only ones cheering it are billionaires, dying coal barons, Big Oil executives, and the morally depraved authoritarian president and Congressional Republicans they’ve bought and paid for.”
  • Federation of American Hospitals: “We urge you to reject this bill and stand up for the working poor, vulnerable population, hospitals, and communities that rely on stable and predictable Medicaid funding. Should this legislation become law, we believe significant work will need to be done in the future to prevent and mitigate the loss of coverage that will be left in its wake.”
  • Food Research & Action Center: “Families will suffer, and so will our economy. Every $1 in SNAP benefits generates up to $1.80 in local economic activity during an economic downturn, helping everyone in the supply chain from farmers to grocery stores.”
  • International Union of Operating Engineers: “This bill does absolutely nothing to “Make America Great Again.” If signed into law, it will become the largest job-killing legislation ever passed by Congress, affecting millions of construction workers. It walks back real progress on American energy independence and domestic manufacturing. It will increase utility bills for hardworking Americans and cede United States global leadership in this sector to China.”
  • International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers: “Make no mistake, this bill will cost hundreds of thousands of good-paying construction jobs… IBEW members and every average American will pay the price as congressional Republicans abandon critical investments in American infrastructure and the energy independence…”
  • NACHC: The “One Big Beautiful Bill” puts millions of Americans at risk of losing their health coverage, including patients of Community Health Centers (CHCs). CHCs provide?high-quality and cost-effective primary and preventive health care to over 16 million patients insured through Medicaid.
  • National Association of Building Trades Unions: "If enacted, the [Republicans' budget bill] stands to be the biggest job-killing bill in the history of this country... the equivalent of terminating more than 1,000 Keystone XL projects... threatens 1.75 million construction jobs."
  • Small Business Majority: “The Senate-passed version of the bill would increase the deficit by $3.3 trillion while also jeopardizing Medicaid access and providing little tax relief to the vast majority of Main Street businesses. This is particularly irresponsible at a time when small business owners are already battling economic headwinds thanks to tariffs.”
  • Solar Energy Industries Association: “Make no mistake: if this bill passes, Americans will pay the price — literally. Power bills will rise. Factory jobs will vanish. Families will be forced to spend more just to keep the lights on and their homes cool.”
REPUBLICANS SPEAK OUT ON TAX SCAM BILL… BUT STILL SUPPORT IT
  • Senator Josh Hawley: “This has been an unhappy episode here in Congress, this effort to cut Medicaid… You cannot take away health care from working people. And unless this is changed going forward, that is what will happen in coming years.”
  • Senator Ron Johnson: This bill is “immoral” and “grotesque”
  • Senator Mitch McConnell: “I know a lot of us are hearing from people back home about Medicaid. But they’ll get over it.”
  • Rep. Thomas Massie:“This bill is a debt bomb ticking”
  • Elon Musk: “Polls show that this bill is political suicide for the Republican Party.”
  • Senator Thom Tillis: “It is inescapable this bill will betray the promise Donald Trump made. I’m telling the president that you have been misinformed. You supporting the Senate mark will hurt people who are eligible and qualified for Medicaid.”

U.S. uninsured rates could resurge if Trump's budget bill passes

Medicaid, SNAP cuts could lead to nearly 500,000 lost healthcare jobs

Across the country, 1.2 million jobs could be lost in 2029 as funding reductions to the safety-net insurance and the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP, ripple through states… The healthcare industry would be particularly hard hit. Nearly 500,000 jobs would be cut in the sector, like roles at hospitals, physician offices, pharmacies and long-term care providers.

More than 40 million people relied on the food-assistance program in 2024, or about 12% of the population. Many are located in red districts represented by legislators who support gutting the aid.

The true cost of the GOP’s megabill will be measured in lives. Thousands of lives.

These cuts will cost more than 51,000 people their lives every year. That’s not hyperbole. It’s a predictable result when you cut off health insurance to people who are old, poor and sick. And it’s based on analyses and projections from researchers at the University of Pennsylvania, Harvard and Yale.
