ICYMI: New Dems Lead the Charge for Entrepreneurship on Start-Up Day, 2014

Rep. Jared Polis, a New Dem who together with New Dem Rep. Gary Peters founded Start Up Day Across America, talks with CNBC about the important role that our startups play in fostering a climate for economic growth and job creation. Click the image above to view the full clip.

From CBS Detroit’s coverage of Rep. Gary Peters’ meeting with Michigan entrepreneurs, “Across the country, members of Congress met with local startups and entrepreneurs to see firsthand entrepreneurship has on their community. Peters toured the M@dison Building, an incubator for tech startups, and Ponyride, a coworking space, and held roundtable discussions with business owners and entrepreneurs. ‘Startups and small businesses are the engines of job creation and economic growth in Michigan, and when they thrive, so does our economy’ said Rep. Peters. ‘Based on the companies represented here today, we have what it takes to make Michigan the startup capital of the Midwest. Various business leaders shared with Peter why they chose to establish and grow their business in Detroit.” https://cbsloc.al/1toykDW

From WFXG Fox 54’s coverage of Rep. John Barrow’s visit to The Clubhou.se, a tech hub in downtown Augusta, Georgia, “’It's an opportunity for us to focus on the challenges that entrepreneurs are facing, especially in the high tech field, and Augusta is amazing,’ said Rep. John Barrow. Several tech start-ups gave presentations and explained to Barrow the sort of assistance they need from the government. ‘Education is something we have to take on directly, and I think it's an old, big system, so it's going to take a lot of people behind us and move forward and progress the way we want to progress,’ said Chase Woodhams. Barrow said he knows the right path to take. ‘I sort of feel like the federal government's role ought to be to lead, follow, or get out of the way,’ explained Rep. Barrow. ‘Many ways they can lead are by providing basic investments in the infrastructure that is needed, and to police that marketplace to make sure the bigs don't gobble up the little guys.’” https://bit.ly/1tBnidy

From the Denver Post on Rep. Ed Perlmutter’s visit to Oz Snowboards in Wheat Ridge, Colorado, “When the real estate market began its spectacular collapse in 2007, Adam Browning found hope for his young family in a packet of absorbent powder he called LiquiLock. LiquiLock, which solidifies water that remains in a toilet before it's pulled from a bathroom floor kept his young family afloat. And it afforded the Colorado State University graduate a chance to pursue his dream of building carbon-fiber, customized snowboards. From a wind-powered warehouse in Wheat Ridge, Browning's crew builds high-end Oz Snowboards while a machine fills $3 packets of LiquiLock bound for stores. ‘When your back is against the wall, you can find a lot of motivation to make things happen," said Browning, a contractor-turned-real estate broker-turned-entrepreneur.’ On Tuesday, Browning hosted U.S. Rep. Ed Perlmutter, D-Lakewood, who was visiting as part of the second annual Startup Day Across America. Around the nation, Washington politicians spent the day visiting nascent businesses that are fueling the country's economic rebound.” https://dpo.st/1pmxaHY

From Technical.ly Delaware’s coverage of Rep. John Carney’s visit to The Loft, a coworking space in Wilmington, Delaware, “Each year, Rep. John Carney (D-Del.) takes a trip to Silicon Valley with a group of Democrats to scope out what’s new and innovative. During their last trip, the group visited San Francisco’s Hattery, a cool, laid-back workspace for entrepreneurs. Carney enjoyed touring the space, but said he knew of something even better back home — Start It Up Delaware’s The Loft coworking space on Market Street. ‘We walked into the Hattery and I thought, we’ve got this in Wilmington, Delaware,’ Carney said. “Delaware needed to create more of an entrepreneurial climate and this (The Loft) is part of that.” On Wednesday, Carney visited the coworking space during its ‘doughnuts and demos’ event, a regular, members-only gathering, which provides the opportunity for members to mingle, meet and share progress and updates.” https://bit.ly/1v66Jts
