New Dem of the Week: Rep. Elizabeth Esty

New Dem of the Week: Rep. Elizabeth Esty (CT-05)

Congresswoman Elizabeth Esty talks with students at the Manufacturing Technology Department at Oliver Wolcott Technical High School in Torrington, CT

Why she's proud to be a New Dem:

"We need to set a thoughtful course to long-term job growth by investing in research and development, rewarding innovation, and ensuring small businesses and manufacturers have the support they need to grow and compete. The New Democrat Coalition recognizes opportunities to promote sustainable economic growth. I’m proud to be a part of the New Democrat Coalition, and I look forward to continuing to work with my New Dem colleagues to help our businesses in Connecticut and around the country innovate, hire, and thrive.”

Her pragmatic, problem-solving experience:

As a state representative and on her local town council, Elizabeth made her mark as an advocate for responsible budgeting and job creation. She worked to balance the budget while providing property tax relief to seniors and ensuring strong funding for public schools. When a local plant closed in her hometown, laying off 1,000 workers, Elizabeth fought for job placements or early retirement packages for the workers. Prior to serving in elected office, Elizabeth was a member of the Supreme Court bar, where she authored briefs to protect access to reproductive health services. She later went on to work in health care and Medicare policy at Yale University.

Elizabeth's innovative policy entrepreneurship:

In Congress, Elizabeth has worked tirelessly to provide manufacturers and small businesses with the certainty they need to grow and create good-paying jobs.

·         STEM: Led bipartisan efforts to boost workforce development and support teacher professional development in the critical STEM fields, because students need the skills to compete for 21st century jobs.

·         Brownfields: Introduced the bipartisan Brownfields Redevelopment Tax Incentive Reauthorization Act to spur investment in clean-up and redevelopment of old industrial sites.

·         Transportation Infrastructure: As a member of the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, Elizabeth has focused on investing and improving our our roads, bridges, and railroads to create jobs today and build the foundation for a productive economy and job growth in the future.

And last October, Elizabeth called for an immediate end to the reckless government shutdown and led efforts urging a commitment to responsible, pragmatic budgeting.
