New Dem of the Week: Rep. Scott Peters

New Dem of the Week: Rep. Scott Peters (CA-52)

Congressman Peters meets with researchers who are working on cutting-edge medical techniques to reduce costs and improve outcomes for patients.

Why he's proud to be a New Dem:

We need a government that is focused on preparing our country for our future, not fighting the battles of the past. Embracing solutions that reduce costs and bureaucracy by using technology and engaging the private sector must be at the center of our path forward. I'm proud to be a New Dem because our country needs innovative ideas for educating our children, growing our economy, reducing our deficit and debt, and bridging the partisan divide."

His pragmatic, problem-solving experience:

Scott is a civic leader who's made improving San Diego his life's work. As a member of the San Diego City Council, he worked tirelessly to clean the city's bays and complete major infrastructure projects, while delivering greater accountability and efficiency through a new combined Council/Mayor form of government. He later served as Chairman of the San Diego Unified Port District - a major economic engine that supports over 40,000 high-skill, high-wage jobs in San Diego.

Scott's innovative policy entrepreneurship:

In October 2013, Scott introduced two bills to put an end to America's cycle of crisis-by-crisis governing and reform the way that the United States lifts the debt limit. The Protect America's Credit Act and the Pay Down the Debt Act would tie the federal debt limit to GDP growth and require federal lawmakers to reach a compromise if the debt grew faster than America's economy. These commonsense solutions were embraced by Senator Alan Simpson and former Clinton economic advisor Erskine Bowles.

Scott is also a champion for San Diego's innovators and startups, leading efforts to support job creating basic research, STEM education and workforce training.
