House Extends Select Committee on the Modernization of Congress Following New Democrat Coalition Push

New Democrat Coalition (NDC) Chair Emeritus Jim Himes (CT-04) co-led a letter with Republican Study Committee Chair Mike Johnson to Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy urging an extension on the bipartisan Select Committee on the Modernization of Congress (Select Committee), which is chaired by NDC Chair Rep. Derek Kilmer. NDC Rep. Dean Phillips (MN-03) also joined 30 freshmen members in a bipartisan letter to Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy calling for an extension for the Select Committee.

Following these efforts, the House passed a resolution to extend the committee to the end of the 116th Congress. The rule that created the Select Committee originally had it set to expire on February 1, 2020. The extension allows the Select Committee to continue its work proposing bipartisan reforms to make Congress work better for the American people.

The Select Committee was created in a package of House rules changes that was spearheaded by Rep. Jim McGovern at the start of the 115th Congress. Chair Kilmer and members of the NDC worked closely with Rep. McGovern to give input on the final House rules package that created the Select Committee.
