NDC Chair Statement on Updated House Legislative Schedule

Washington, DC Today, New Democrat Coalition (NDC) Chair Derek Kilmer (WA-06) issued a statement following the release of the updated house legislative schedule for the coming months. The NDC has long been pushing for the implementation of remote voting by proxy and the authorization of virtual committee proceedings to ensure Congress can return to normal order and continue legislating for the American people.

“In the midst of this pandemic, it's important for the House to continue to uphold its responsibility of legislating on behalf of the American people and conducting oversight to ensure taxpayer resources are invested efficiently and effectively. New Dems are pleased to see the Majority Leader’s plan for Committees to work virtually and come in for longer, more targeted voting sessions that utilize remote voting by proxy to pass critical legislation important to responding to the pandemic and other priorities for the American people.”

Earlier this month, the House passed H. Res. 965 to allow temporary changes remote voting on the House Floor and virtual committee proceedings during the pandemic. Prior to the resolution’s passage, NDC Leadership Members sent a letter to House Democratic Leadership and Chairs of the Standing House Committees urging Leadership and Committee Chairs to return to regular order, despite the challenges of remote work, by utilizing the technology necessary for virtual legislative hearings and meetings.
