New Dem Chair-Elect: House Democrats Saved the American People from Speaker Johnson’s Shutdown

Today, New Democrat Coalition Chair-Elect Brad Schneider (IL-10) issued a statement following the House vote on a measure to fund the government until March 2025. The Continuing Resolution passed with House Democrats providing the overwhelming majority of votes in favor.

New Dems helped secure several key provisions in the final legislation, including: $100 billion in disaster relief, $10 billion in economic assistance for America’s farmers, and an extension of the Farm Bill.

“Today, New Dems were united, standing strong to again stop Republicans from shutting down the government. Keeping the government operating is a win for the American people. Now, ahead of the holidays, our servicemembers, federal employees, farmers, and economy will be spared from the effects of the Musk/Trump/Johnson Christmas shutdown.

“Democrats were united and kept our word. Speaker Johnson did not. He caved to the demands of the President-Elect and an unelected, wannabe oligarch, tearing up a negotiated agreement and scrapping positive legislation that would have tackled the opioid epidemic, funded child cancer research, strengthened our workforce, and so much more.

“Throughout the Republican infighting and chaos, Democrats held firm and forced the Speaker to abandon the efforts to empower Elon Musk and President-Elect Trump to add trillions of new debt on the backs of hardworking Americans, just to give billionaires like them another tax break.

“New Dems will always work and vote in the best interest of the American people, including reaching across the aisle whenever possible. As we rapidly approach the beginning of the 119th Congress, House Republicans must decide who they serve: Donald Trump and the billionaire on his shoulder, or the hardworking men and women who elected them to Congress.”
