New Dem Climate and Clean Energy Task Force Applauds Biden Administration for Adopting the Coalition’s Recommendation to Streamline Clean Energy Deployment

The New Dem Climate and Clean Energy Task Force previously called on the Administration to designate a lead agency for environmental reviews to facilitate rapid transmission deployment

Today, the New Democrat Coalition (NDC) Climate and Clean Energy Task Force, led by Chair Scott Peters (CA-50) and Vice Chairs Sean Casten (IL-06), Eric Sorensen (IL-17), and Susan Wild (PA-07) released the following statement on the Department of Energy’s (DOE) proposed rule to establish a lead agency to streamline the permitting process for electric transmission:

“Accelerating upgrades to the electric grid is critical to bringing clean energy projects online and safeguarding America’s energy security. That’s why our Task Force penned a letter to the Administration in April calling for swift actions to streamline federal review processes in order to implement the Inflation Reduction Act’s transformational investments in our electrical grid with the urgency this moment demands.

“This new proposed rule would shorten the permitting timeline while ensuring thorough consideration of environmental and community impacts, and we applaud the Biden administration for taking decisive action on this issue.

“However, Executive Action is only part of the solution. New Dems look forward to leading bipartisan efforts in Congress by implementing our permitting reform priorities to create a regulatory landscape that ensures robust community input, lowers barriers to access for clean energy, and delivers the outcomes we need to lower energy costs and confront the climate crisis.”
