New Dem Leaders Slam Republicans for Playing Politics with National Security in NDAA

Today, New Democrat Coalition Chair Brad Schneider (IL-10) and National Security Working Group Chair Gil Cisneros (CA-31) criticized House Republicans for corrupting the traditionally bipartisan National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) process with poison pill amendments and culture war agendas.

“The NDAA is one of the last pieces of legislation that typically passes with bipartisan support. Unfortunately, House Republicans corrupted this bipartisan process, jamming this critical legislation with far-right poison pill amendments that attack our servicemembers, eliminate access to healthcare, and jeopardize our military readiness. America’s national security is too important to treat the NDAA like a political football.

“This legislation also ignores the realities of our rising national debt by including a staggering $1.15 trillion in military spending for the next year, emboldening an Administration waging an ill-conceived, costly, and deadly war. Congressional Republicans are all too eager to shovel billions of taxpayer dollars into the President’s military misadventures while ripping food and healthcare from working people here at home.

“Ultimately this legislation fails to meet our national security needs or hold this Administration accountable, all while punishing American heroes who have given everything to serve this country. New Dems remain at the table to advance truly bipartisan legislation that protects the American people and our servicemembers.”
