New Dem Leadership Calls on Handful of Republicans to Join Democrats in Lowering Healthcare Costs
Today, New Democrat Coalition Leadership issued a statement calling for just four House Republicans to join Democrats in extending the Affordable Care Act tax credits before the end of the year and prevent healthcare costs from skyrocketing in 2026.
“For more than 15 years, Republicans have tried and failed to produce even basic elements of a healthcare plan. Instead, this summer they cut Medicaid for more than 10 million people and are now refusing to act to provide affordable health insurance for millions of hardworking American families.
“The stakes are enormously high. Next month, millions of Americans will see their monthly healthcare costs double, triple, or worse. House Republicans have the majority but have yet to act. Our constituents can’t afford any more empty promises or wasted time from a House Republican leadership team that can’t corral their own members and yet is unwilling to work with Democrats to find a middle path forward.
“New Dems recognize that this is a moment—a real opportunity—for those House Republicans who say they want to help working families afford health insurance to work together towards advancing a real solution. New Dems are committed to finding the common ground to tackle this healthcare crisis affecting all Americans. The fastest path is to bring a simple three-year extension to the floor for a vote. We have 214 of the 218 signatures necessary. We only need four more.
“We remain at the table and invite our Republican colleagues to join us—quickly. There is no excuse for Speaker Johnson to send Congress home without acting to lower healthcare costs.”
