New Dem Leadership Praises Bipartisan Budget Deal

Washington, DC – Today, the House passed a bipartisan budget agreement that raises the debt limit, sets funding levels until 2017, and provides greater economic certainty. Earlier this year, House New Democrat leadership Members sent two letters to Speaker Boehner calling on him to provide stability to our economy and the U.S. government by raising the debt limit, averting a shutdown, and ending sequestration. New Dem Chairman Ron Kind released the following statement following today’s vote:

“I am pleased leaders from both parties chose to put politics aside and do what’s right for the country. With the U.S. expected to reach the debt limit in under a week, the only responsible course of action was to ensure America can pay its debts by raising the debt limit and compromising on funding levels to take the threat of another costly shutdown off the table.

This agreement sets more appropriate caps for funding national security and investing in critical areas like education, job training, and research.  In order for the economy to continue growing, we need to invest more in areas critical to strengthening our competitiveness and maintaining our place as the world’s leading economy.

Going forward, I hope we are able to build on the momentum of bipartisan successes like this budget deal and the Export-Import bank reauthorization. Together we must focus on commonsense priorities that will grow our economy and support everyday Americans. The New Democrat Coalition looks forward to working with leaders of both parties in coming months to find pragmatic solutions to pressing issues. ”
