New Dem Chairman Ron Kind’s Statement on Election of Paul Ryan as Next Speaker of the House
Washington, DC - Today, the House of Representatives voted to induct Paul D. Ryan as the next Speaker of the House. New Democrat Coalition Chairman Ron Kind issued the following statement:
“As Badgers we are proud of Paul, who will be the first Speaker of the House of Representatives from Wisconsin. Paul and I have worked together to put the needs of Wisconsinites first and I look forward to continuing that. I hope that in his new role as Speaker he understands that in our Democracy, with checks and balances, we need to work in a bipartisan manner address our challenges and not continue to let hyper-partisanship cause gridlock and dysfunction.”
In September and again in October, New Dem leadership Members sent letters to Speaker Boehner outlining multiple bipartisan agenda items for the fall, including averting a government shutdown, raising the debt limit, fixing the sequester, and reauthorizing the Export-Import Bank. Under Speaker Boehner, the House took votes on four of seven of these priorities, and is set to act on another if it addresses long-term infrastructure funding next week.
"The priorities we sent to Speaker Boehner in the last month are all critical for growing our economy and providing stability for American workers and businesses," said Chairman Kind. "Importantly, they all took bipartisan cooperation. The New Democrat Coalition and I look forward to working with Speaker Ryan in the coming months to find pragmatic solutions to these and other issues vital to creating jobs and strengthening our economy."
