New Democrat Coalition Chairman Ron Kind’s Statement on Release of TPP Text

Washington, DC – Today, the text of the 12-country Transpacific Partnership (TPP) was released. New Democrat Coalition Chair Ron Kind released the following statement:

“With the release of the text the clock for reviewing the agreement will soon start. I look forward to doing a thorough review of the text and continuing to attend briefings to make sure this agreement levels the playing field for our workers, businesses, and farmers so they can successfully compete in the global economy.  When it comes to trade in the Pacific region, we only have three options: our rules, China’s rules, or no rules at all.

“The TPP is the largest — and most progressive — trade deal in history, and with its conclusion last month, the U.S. has a path toward reducing and eliminating more than 18,000 taxes on exported products, raising labor and environmental standards around the world, protecting human rights, and creating more good-paying jobs here at home. Already, the administration has said the TPP will have stronger labor and environmental standards than any previous U.S. trade agreement.

“Over the coming months I hope my colleagues will review the agreement and judge it on its merits and against the status quo.”

This week Chairman Kind wrote an op-ed in The Hill about the importance of the United States writing the rules of trade. To see the full text of the agreement, click here.
