New Dem Leadership Rebukes House Republicans’ Passage of President Trump’s Extreme Cuts to Foreign Assistance, Public Broadcasting
Today, New Democrat Coalition Leadership issued a statement on the House passage of President Trump’s request to cancel $9 billion in congressionally appropriated funding for foreign assistance – including global health and food programs – and the Corporation for Public Broadcasting.
“The ink is still drying on the President’s Big Bad Bill, and Republicans are already back making life harder for the American people – gutting essential funding that keeps our country safe and saves lives. Once more, under the cover of night, Republicans crammed through legislation to sell off Sesame Street and close down local broadcasting in rural communities.
“The $9 billion worth of cuts in this package won’t help to lower costs for working families or make a dent in the $4 trillion of new debt Republicans passed two weeks ago. The cuts will, however, weaken our national security, lead to millions of preventable deaths around the world, and threaten public information lifelines that mean so much to so many – especially in underserved small towns and farming communities across our heartland.
“As the cost of living continues rising, it’s clear that hardworking families can’t afford Republicans’ chaotic, cruel and costly agenda. That’s why New Dems will keep fighting back, working to protect the funding and programs everyday Americans rely on.”
