New Democrat Coalition Applauds Introduction of Comprehensive Immigration Reform Discharge Petition

Led by the original sponsor of House Democrats’ comprehensive immigration reform measure, H.R. 15 and the leader of House Democrats’ discharge petition effort, Rep. Joe Garcia (D-FL), the New Democrat Coalition’s Immigration Reform Task Force Co-Chairs, Reps. Garcia, Jared Polis (D-CO) and Joaquin Castro (D-TX) issued the following statement in response to the introduction of a discharge petition to force H.R. 15 to a vote.

“We are pleased to see the introduction of a discharge petition that would force a vote on a bill that couldn’t be more essential to America’s economic future – comprehensive immigration reform,” the statement read. “The analysis of the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office shows that comprehensive reform will lower deficits by $900 billion, and the Center for American Progress estimates that reform will add over $1.1 trillion to our economy. It’s time for us to put partisanship aside and acknowledge that immigration reform is good for American jobs, innovation and competitiveness.”

After releasing principles for a comprehensive immigration reform package in April, the Coalition maintained its effort to build support for a measure that creates American jobs, lowers the deficit, and provides an earned pathway to citizenship for millions of undocumented Americans with a series of summits with leaders in the technology industry and key figures in the immigration reform debate, including Senator Michael Bennet (CO) of the Senate Gang of Eight and Rep. Luis Gutierrez (IL-04). The group also touted a multi-industry letter from the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and 636 business organizations in February urging the House to take up comprehensive immigration reform.
