New Democrat Coalition Chair Statement on House Passage of SECURE Act

Today, New Democrat Coalition Chair Derek Kilmer released the following statement after the House of Representatives passed H.R. 1994, the Setting Every Community Up for Retirement Enhancement (SECURE) Act which would help more Americans—including seniors, home health-care workers, and students—to save more for a secure retirement and delivers an urgently needed fix for Gold Star military families facing drastic tax hikes following the GOP tax bill:

“Too many American families are in danger of not having enough savings for a secure retirement. This important bipartisan legislation will help make it easier for small businesses in our communities to offer retirement plans for their hard-working employees and ensure that home health care workers can receive the retirement benefits they deserve. In addition, this bill will make an urgently needed fix for Gold Star military families to ensure they don’t face unexpected or unfair tax increases due to an error in Republican-led tax legislation last Congress.”

The basis for the SECURE Act was NDC Rep. Ron Kind’s co-introduced Retirement Enhancement & Savings Act (RESA), which makes it easier for small businesses to offer retirement savings and expands access to and increase savings within the employer-based retirement system. RESA was featured in NDC’s Economic Opportunity Agenda: A Future that Works. Read more in the report: Creating a 21st Century Social Contract.
