New Democrat Coalition Chair Statement on Supreme Court Decision to Overturn Roe v. Wade

Today, New Democrat Coalition (NDC) Chair Suzan DelBene (WA-01) released the below statement following the Supreme Court decision to overturn Roe v. Wade, a devastating ruling that ends half a century of constitutional protection for a woman’s right to make her own health care decisions.

"Today, the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade and stripped women of the right to decide what they do with their bodies. This means, for the first time in nearly 50 years, millions of women across the country seeking abortion care will be denied access to medical care they had just yesterday. Women living in 2022 have fewer rights than women in 1973.

“This ruling will impact women everywhere, but especially women of color and those living in rural and low-income communities where access to medical and reproductive care is already limited. Women’s lives will be upended and put at risk by unplanned pregnancies.

“New Dems have already voted to pass the Women’s Health Protection Act to codify Roe, but Senate Republicans blocked this legislation. While we are devastated, we are not deterred. We will keep fighting tooth and nail to protect women’s individual freedom.  When Americans cast their ballots in November, they will have the power to elect a pro-choice Democratic majority that will keep fighting for their freedoms or Republicans who are working to take them away.”
