New Democrat Coalition Chairman Ron Kind’s Statement on Supreme Court Decision on Immigration

Washington, DC – Today the Supreme Court issued a 4-4 ruling in United States v. Texas, the case concerning the Deferred Action for Parents of Americans and Lawful Permanent Residents (DAPA) and expanded Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) programs. The decision is a harsh reminder and call of action that Republicans and Democrats need to come together to pass comprehensive immigration reform to fix our broken immigration system. DAPA and DACA allow undocumented immigrants with significant family and community ties here to obtain temporary, renewable deferrals of deportation.

“Today’s Supreme Court decision serves as another reminder of why Congress needs to take action and pass comprehensive immigration reform. For the economic prosperity of our businesses, workers, and farmers I hope my colleagues will come together and fix our broken immigration system. There is no doubt that comprehensive reform will make us a stronger and more competitive economy and unleash untapped potential that’s been locked up because of the broken system,” said Chairman Kind.

Without action on comprehensive reform, the U.S. continues to lose out on top talent from around the world, our economy suffers as bright minds go elsewhere, and families remain separated. Last Congress, New Dems helped lead the effort to push forward comprehensive immigration reform and have prioritized passage of reform in the New Democrat Coalition’sAmerican Prosperity Agenda: Winning the Future, which outlines a list of policies to keep America the most competitive, creative, and innovative country in the world. Today’s decision is a setback for our entire nation, but New Dems will continue fighting for immigration reform that secures our borders and provides an earned pathway to citizenship, and grows our economy.
